"Oz The Great & Powerful" Movie Review at Coronado Village Theatre

The official trailer for "Oz The Great & Powerful"

On Friday Night I paid a visit to the Coronado Village Theatre to view the newly released "Oz The Great & Powerful." I had been looking forward to seeing this take on Dorothy's The Wizard of Oz, and I wasn't disappointed.

From the director of the Spider Man trilogy and the producer of Alice and Wonderland comes a film full of excitement and vibrant color. The story kicks off in black and white with the main character, a mediocre magician by the name of Oscar Diggs (James Franco), trying to make ends meet in dusty Kansas. Oz is somewhat of a ladies man, and pretty soon his charms lead him to trouble. He had unwittingly wooed the girl of the circus wrestler, and while trying to escape in a hot air balloon he is swept up into a tornado. Oz pleads to the sky for another chance, and luckily someone answers his call.

Time seems to slow for Oscar as the screen fills with color and the view of the strange new land appears. Little does he know, Oz will be expected by the people to embark on a journey to defeat the Wicked Witch, and save the land of Oz. Through out the film, Franco's character is filled with self doubt. He has to decide, is he able to be the kind of wizard the people need?

As the film progresses, the audience will find themselves laughing at times and gripping the arm rests at others. There is much adventure, and while it's a perfect film for the family, children five or under may be a little scared at some parts. Local movie goer Lauren Farguson said, "The movie was very good; it was very well done and it was definitely one for all ages."

Overall, this is a feel-good film that will have you thinking back to Dorothy and Toto. A modern twist on a classic film, I recommend this to anyone who is up for a little adventure.
