This photo was taken last Saturday (September 14, 2013) at 10am by Joe Ditler on the Coronado Bridge heading towards San Diego. The Ford truck pictured contains at least 10 different bikes including many beach cruisers.
The photo was circulated around Facebook earlier this week and one Facebook user submitted it to the Coronado Police Department. The CPD did respond saying that a detective would follow up. eCoronado.com has blurred the license plate for this post, but the original image on Facebook and submitted to the CPD does contain the plate details.
Many people on Facebook commented that the truck has been seen in Coronado before and there was a concern that it may be connected to the many bike thefts that take place around Coronado.
UPDATE: October 17th
The Coronado Police Department completed their investigation of this incident. CPD provided eCoronado.com with the following statement:
Detectives were able to locate the registered owner of the truck to a Navy sailor stationed at NAB. The truck owner occasionally lends the vehicle to a co-worker who facilitates the Navy donating bicycles, that have been abandoned on Base, to a non-profit charity in San Diego. The charity refurbishes the bicycles and then gives them to children in need. The information provided was verified by Military Police, NCIS and the non-profit charity. The Police Department would like to thank the citizens involved for taking the time to be vigilant and reporting the information to police. The license plate and photo were essential in tracking down the registered owner.
Bicycle theft continues to be a problem in our community and we would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to lock their bikes with a u-lock or heavy duty chain lock that can’t be easily cut. The Police Department is offering FREE bicycle registrations through the National Bike Registry during regular business hours 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
