Having lived here for many years, to this day I don't understand why the two local gas stations charge what they do for a gallon of gasoline. The simple math follows:

  • Average automobile holds 18 gallons of gas.
  • 18 gallons X (times) average price in San Diego @ $3.05 = $54.90
  • 18 gallons X (times) average price in Coronado @ $3.56 = $64.08

Yes, I understand the value of our dirt, yet still, it just seems unneighborly. . .

Gas/Diesel has to be delivered to Coronado via the Strand. No flammables, corrosives, or explosives, allowed on the Coronado Bay Bridge per the CADOT. I don't know if that's the reason why, but gas has always been more expensive here in Coronado than in San Diego.

It's called "Captive Audience".

I know someone who used to work at the downtown Coronado gas station. Believe it or not, they don't make much per gallon of gas. The delivery costs are higher - due to trucks having to travel so far and probably low volume.

all the math done (gallons to liters / euros to dollars) you'd pay about $106 in my neighborhood

Because they can and folks will buy it - unless you are willing to vote-with-your-feet and go off island that's what you pay for convenience. The delivery costs probably have something to do with it but I doubt the extra cost is $0.40+ a gallon. Watch for them to go up this weekend and down the next.

So the way to get around the CADOT and the over priced gas charges would be to drive to IB? Makes sense to me. I'm willing to drive the strand to save the money.

Appreciate the feedback! A couple comments made in regard to the transportation (delivery) cost of the fuel as the reason for higher prices, doesn't seem to work for me. We have IB approximately 7 miles away -- essentially located in our Nation's South-Western cul-de-sac -- and their gasoline stations are on the low end of the county's "price-per-gallon" spectrum. And too, we have the military base(s) here in Coronado that must be getting their fuels at awesome pricing so they are able to past those prices -- minus some taxation -- to the military, vets, and their dependents.

As a long-time Coronado resident, I really truly want to support our local merchants yet, I think when it comes to fuel(s), I'll make the "IB run."

The "IB run" saves me at least $8.00 per fill. I don't buy the trucking issue either. $.40 +/- per gallon to drive an extra 7-8 miles? I gotta bridge to sell if anyone needs it.

It's been my observations that the cost of gas is about location. This seems to be the case in every state I've visited. If the property values are high in a neighborhood the gasoline is going to be high.
