Principal Karl Mueller Leaving Coronado High School for San Dieguito UHSD

It is my sad duty to inform the community that after many years of service as Principal of Coronado High School, Karl Mueller has decided to accept the position of principal at Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito Union High School District. He will begin this new position on July 1, 2013.

We will miss Karl and all that he has added to this district and to CHS as a principal, administrator, and as an educator. The quality of his work and the dedication he has shown will be difficult to replace.

However, we already have a person on our staff who performs admirably, has overwhelming dedication to the school, and already knows the faculty and staff. I am pleased to announce that I have offered the position of CHS Principal to Jenny Moore. Jenny is now considering my offer and would like some time to discuss it with her family.

Below is the letter that Karl sent to his staff today...

Friends,

After eight proud years of service to the staff and student body at Coronado High School, I have made the difficult decision to explore a new challenge as principal of Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito Union High School District. I accepted the position on Friday, June 7th, and wanted to inform you as soon as possible.

This opportunity will support my growth as an educator. I believe that working within a large secondary district, I will gain valuable experiences as a member of an administrative team focused on the changing needs of public high school students.

I appreciate all that each of you has provided me: guidance, friendship, wisdom, and patience.

I am so proud of the collaborative work that we have accomplished as a team at CHS. We have added programs that are aligned with our students’ interests, maintained and promoted academic rigor, celebrated, consoled, created, and laughed-together.

What I will miss the most is the culture we have cultivated-the connection between faculty and each member of our student body, the respect we share, the trusting environment where children feel safe to be themselves, and the strong Islander pride that made coming to work each day purposeful.

 I will miss you guys.

 Love, Karl

Wow!  That was NOT a headline I expected to see.  Congratulations Mr. Mueller on your new position.  We will certainly miss you at CHS, but hope to see Jenny Moore at the helm!

I imagine that there are some Principals around San Diego County who spend most of their time dealing with challenges from the confines of their offices while their Assistant Principals and subordinates screen and address other problems for them. Karl Mueller is the only Principal I've worked for who eats lunch on the quad everyday to give students, faculty, and everyone a chance to interact with and to get to know him. He has been closer to the student body than I would've thought possible for a High School Principal and he is a dynamic and sympathetic leader. He attacks challenges head on and he is accessible to students and parents alike to work with them to fashion solutions.

While his departure is going to be a tremendous loss to our school community, the person who served as Vice Principal for every year of Karl's Principalship, Jenny Moore, is the perfect person to succeed him. She has a complimentary vision and skill set and will undoubtedly lead CHS is the same progressive direction it has been headed in for years.

Well said, Casey. We are so lucky to work with these administrators who truly care, are approachable, supportive and inspiring.
