SANDAG releases its' 2050 Plan (RTP) for San Diego. Is Coronado ready?

SANDAG has released it's Regional Transportation Plan for 2050 and it is the first Metropolitan Planning Organization under new state legislation to require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. Thank you and congratulations, Councilwoman Barbara Denny, for having the insight and forethought to lead Coronado down the "green" highway to the future instead of into a BIG HOLE IN THE GROUND. SANDAG is now advocating for carpools, vanpools and INCREASING TRANSIT SERVICE. Hmmm...that sounds like the arguments made AGAINST the Tunnel. Apparently, the "NO ON PROP H" arguments DIDN'T mislead the voters of Coronado. Ironically, Coronado is in yet another study that may REDUCE access to public transportation in Coronado and INCREASE use of private vehicles in our City. Eliminating bus stops and increasing parking spaces downtown will encourage use of private vehicles and is contrary to the future vision of SANDAG. Please go the SANDAG's website to have updates emailed to you and to take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TMGQQFZ .

"The Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS) is a new element of the RTP, as required by SB 375, and will demonstrate how the development patterns and the transportation network, policies, and programs can work together to achieve the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for cars and light trucks."

"If you would like to get involved and receive updates about the RTP, SCS, andGHG target-setting, please e-mail 2050rtp@sandag.org."

You're welcome, Denise.

And thank you, Jef, for your support and kind words. I couldn't have done it without all of the good people in the grass roots movement to stop wasting taxpayers' dollars on the Coronado tunnel project. We had record voter turnout of 53% in the primary election of 8 June 2010. These voters decisively defeated the Coronado tunnel project by defeating Proposition H (Coronado tunnel) by 67%. Congratulations and thank you to the voters of Coronado for a job well done.

Now that the voters have released Coronado city council from its former grip of tunnel vision, we are in an exciting time to plan Coronado's new transportation policy. I am pleased to say that we will hold a town meeting -- similar to my monthly SPEAK OUT CORONADO community meetings -- on September 9 from 5:30 to 8 pm in the Coronado library. I invite all Coronado residents and business owners to attend the meeting and speak out with your opinions. Check www.barbaratdenny.com for more information as it develops.

The professionals at SANDAG are open to all the reasonable transportation ideas that I have been writing and speaking about publicly since running for office in August 2008.

Since being sworn in as your City Councilwoman in June 2009, I have maintained a professional dialogue with the good people of SANDAG. I enjoy my job advocating strongly for Coronado's best interests at all times, especially when it comes to one of my areas of expertise -- transportation policy. Rest assured that I will see to it that Coronado will not be overlooked when it comes to our regional transportation resources which are managed by SANDAG.

Regarding the bus stop removal issue, citizens who are interested can write to me at bdenny@coronado.ca.us to give my your opinion on the proposed removal of six Orange Avenue bus stops at Fifth, Seventh and Ninth Streets. In my opinion, we shouldn't waste city staff's time on "studying" removal of Orange Avenue bus stops.

Instead, since August 2008, it has been my goal that we direct city staff to spend their time decreasing traffic congestion by increasing ridership on the:

~ Bus (and Mass Transit of all forms)
~ Ferry
~ Slugging (Carpooling)
~ Park & Ride
~ Navy Van Pools
~ MTS-Navy Express Bus (new form of an old, reliable idea).

I am very enthusiastic about Coronado's new transportation policy and honored to be leading the way.

I'm behind you 110%, Councilwoman Denny. THIS is where our energies need to be directed:

~ Bus (and Mass Transit of all forms)
~ Ferry
~ Slugging (Carpooling)
~ Park & Ride
~ Navy Van Pools
~ MTS-Navy Express Bus (new form of an old, reliable idea).

I can say no more. Any other diversion of resources and time is a waste.
