Slain Garces Grads Remembered at School Ceremony

David Reis was remembered Friday as an outdoorsman who excelled academically and a Navy pilot with a promising career ahead of him. His sister, Karen, was a tough competitor on the volleyball court, equally brilliant and was pursuing requirements to become an occupational therapist.

They both had busy schedules, but David and Karen Reis always made time for their family.

"The most important thing they could teach us was their commitment to their family," said Garces Memorial High School President John Fanucchi at a Celebration of Life ceremony held on the school's football field.

Hundreds of former and current students, family members and friends -- many holding balloons -- packed rows of bleachers on the south end of the field. Several talked about David and Karen, who were shot and killed in Coronado early New Year's Day.
