Susan Keith Announces Her Candidacy for Coronado City Council

I am announcing my candidacy for a seat on the Coronado City Council.

I have experience volunteering in our community as I served on the Planning Commission, the Historic Resource Commission, the Library Board of Trustees and the Coronado City Council.  And for the last few years I have devoted my time to the Coronado Historical Association.

I have watched with dismay the over building of our village, with no consideration to the neighbor’s property or the neighborhoods.  I want to help control that overbuilding!  The new structures should enhance our community not reduce the value of our adjoining properties. We must protect out future by preserving our past. And we can do this together by controlling the envelopes of these new buildings, by producing a comprehensive package reducing the presently allowed F.A.R., setbacks and design features.

Code enforcement should be readdressed.  I believe in a “proactive” approach rather than the “reactive” policy now supported by the present Council.  The city should have a full time code enforcement officer who can follow through on any violations.

The sidewalks in the downtown are filthy and should be cleaned on a weekly basis, especially in the summer months when we have so many visitors.

These are just a few of the issues that concern me and my decision to run for Council was not an easy one.  I know the amount of time it involves and the commitment one must make.  But I have loved this town and felt privileged to have called it home.  So I am stepping forward and offering you my time and my commitment.  If you are looking for a candidate with experience on local issues, a love of Coronado, and a common sense approach to government, I’m your candidate.  I would appreciate your support.

Please get into more detail about how you will be proactive about code enforcement.  I hope you're not going to add employees to the city staff.  This can be handled if the existing staff took phone calls from our fellow neighbors reporting code violations on a city HOTLINE.  Even the police could be used to take initial onsite reports as they follow-up on reported alleged violations.  My guess is a team of volunteers could be empowered with investigating reported violations.  Do you think the local hotels and resorts would fund the enforcement team that investigates short-term vacation rentals?  There are MANY ways to do this without HIRING people. Tell us how you will do this without increasing the city's budget.

Susan, You go girl!  I agree that it is past time that the city council work for the betterment of the city and its citizens who really do want to see life in Coronado protected form overdevelopment and megamantions....!

Code enforcement is a #1 priority in my book too...you've got my vote and I think you'll do an excellent job representing us 'real' residents and nolt pandering to the part-time vacation rental owners!
