While walking past Del yesterday, noticed about 6 or 7 odd looking birds on stands on Windsor Lawn. I asked a Del employee about it and was told they are TETHERED vultures who are placed there for the day to scare Seagulls away. Apparently gulls have been diving into some Sheerwater food and hence, the vultures are used to scare the gulls.
Just wondering....how does this fit with animal rights?

sounds like that would not fly!  how about some fishing line hung high strategically?

I guess the falcons flying a couple weeks back didn't work? Vultures just seem like an odd remedy.

The vultures should be allowed to return to their native habitat - Congress.

But vultures eat carrion, and aren't predators.  Odd.

I believe all of the birds were actually falcons and not vultures. I spoke to one of the handlers and apparently they have been hired by the Del as an effective way to reduce the aggressive starlings and seagulls around Sheerwater and the outdoor food areas. They had six or seven falcons...some tethered but they also walked around with the birds as well. In the hour or so I observed them, they were extremely effective...no birds whatsoever around the dining areas.
