Renee Perea and Alexis Reitmeyer preparing a model to appear on the runway at the 2013 New York Fashion Week.
Recently, two members of the Coronado Bliss Salon and Spa family had the once in a lifetime experience of participating in the 2013 New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Alexis Reitmeyer and Renee Perea both worked alongside the Aveda Team on makeup and hair styling for many of the models who graced the Fashion Week runways. Alexis is a Coronado local and co-owner of Coronado Bliss, as well as an accomplished Aveda makeup artist. Renee is an Aveda Master Hairstylist and longtime employee of Coronado Bliss. This was a first time experience for both women and one they hope to repeat every year.
Some of the designers that the Aveda Team worked with this season were Nautica, Leanne Marshall, Todd Snyder, Carlos Alberto, and Joanna Mastroianni. Each designer is “extremely detailed in what look they want to achieve, on both the female and male models” Alexis explained to me. “If they are not satisfied with the outcome you have to start over!” The fashion shows can be very hectic and it feels like an “organized frenzy” backstage, says Renee. She also shared that “you really have to stay focused, and be ready to jump right in” when needed.
For Alexis, the best part of Fashion Week was the chance to be backstage and meet the fashion designers, as well as view their new collections before the rest of the world. She also enjoyed meeting her fellow makeup artists and learning new makeup techniques and tricks from other professionals in her field. Renee’s favorite moment was when she met the entire Aveda Team at the main Fashion Week building, located at Lincoln Center, on the Upper West Side of NYC: “I saw the Aveda Team from all over the world that I was working with, the press was all over, and I realized how fortunate I am to be a part of such a huge event.”
Attending New York Fashion Week is a dream for many in the fashion and beauty industry across the world and having the opportunity to work backstage with the designers and models is a great privilege. Alexis and Renee offered me a few helpful tips to pass on to anyone aspiring to the position. Above all else, you have to be flexible and have a great attitude. “Anything can change at any moment while you’re backstage. Call times are constantly changing, models run late, and designers can change their minds last minute,” cautions Alexis. Also, Renee says to “always take advantage of opportunities to learn and grow” and work hard for the opportunity - “It is Worth it!” She remembers when she was in cosmetology school in 2004 and only dreaming of NY Fashion Week and hanging up posters of the event on her walls. Now she has had the chance to “be a part of fashion history”.
Even though Coronado is a long way from New York City and the Fashion Week festivities, some of the aspects of their time in the Big Apple will carry over into their everyday work at Coronado Bliss. Alexis confirms “I will be able to share the current and upcoming trends with our guests and modify the runway looks to fit their everyday fashion here in Coronado.” Through her experiences at fashion week, Renee has learned these three great tips that will influence her work in Coronado: “Timing is so important. Stay focused. Take advantage of opportunities.”
Alexis is equally enthusiastic: “So far, this experience has to be the highlight of my career. Participating in New York Fashion Week fueled my passion for my work in the beauty industry! I can’t wait to keep growing and learning. I am very blessed to be able to say that I love my job!”
