USS Carl Vinson To Return To San Diego After Deployment That Included Osama bin Laden Burial
SAN DIEGO -- The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its nearly 6,000 sailors and Marines will return home to San Diego on Wednesday, following a seven-month voyage that included the burial-at-sea of terrorist Osama bin Laden, the Navy announced Friday.
After bin Laden was killed by Navy SEALs on May 1 in Pakistan, his body was flown to the ship for burial in the North Arabian Sea.
A Navy message to the media announcing the Vinson's return home did not mention its role in the operation, but noted the ship's aircraft flew more than 1,500 sorties in three months to support the military in Afghanistan and Iraq; helped stop two piracy attempts; conducted exercises with numerous other nations; and hosted the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, the San Diego Padres and comedian Gallagher.
