What is the most underutilized property in Coronado?

What is the most underutilized property in Coronado?

A week ago you may have said the Village Theatre. You can’t anymore because that project is finally moving forward. Maybe the empty lot next to Il Fornaio? Both are topics I wrote about recently.

Well, what do you think is the most underutilized property in town?

I think it’s the Coronado Ferry Landing. Those folks are sitting on an untapped gold mine. Okay, wait. It’s very likely already a gold mine. But, couldn’t it be better? Better for us?

I don’t know many locals who head down there regularly to shop or eat. Perhaps a bit more after Candelas and the pizza joint spruced things up? Still, not that often.

Alright, so hear me out. This is what I’m thinking. Please let me know if you are with me or think I’m nuts. Yes, I want a merry-go-round on the water, as I’ve mentioned. People keep writing to me or stopping me on Orange to tell me they would love to see something like that go forward. Frankly, I was surprised by the support for it.

This concept has moved some people to think even bigger.

A friend stopped me in front of 1134 on my way to Graham Memorial, and said “When are you going to put in the merry-go-round?” I laughed and she said “No. Seriously. It would be great.”

She elaborated on the idea: “What’s up with the Farmer’s Market down there? They need to spice it up. It’s so dull and small.” She is right. Most Farmer’s Markets have face painting for kids, kettle corn, and more adventurous food options.

I know if the Farmer’s Market resembled the one down in Imperial Beach or even a bit like the Hillcrest one I’d head down to the Landing much more often. Wouldn’t you?

We just need some more incentive to pull us in. Burger King and Lifeguard On Duty shops won’t cut it. A few are fine, but not every shop. What would you like to see down there?

Arguably, Coronado’s most precious and public shoreline is dedicated to tourism. Now, don’t get me wrong. Coronado needs tourism for our general fund to thrive, but I think the folks at the Landing could strike a stronger balance and entice residents into their stores and restaurants with businesses more geared toward locals.

They are on their way. I dig the moves they’ve made so far. Let’s just hope they nudge themselves a bit more. Let me know what kind of changes you’d like to see down there?

If we show those guys down there we mean business, maybe they’ll change theirs for the better.

Thanks for listening.

If you are going to throw out your crazy idea – here’s mine.

I think we should hire these guys
http://shweeb.com/index.php?m=video_gallery
To build us their system from the Ferry Landing along First Street to and through North Island.

A second line can go up the median on Orange through to NAB.
Stops can be at the Library, Rotary Park, the Del, and the Shores.

A third line could follow the bike trail and meet up with the Orange Avenue line at NAB.

This project is right for Coronado in so many ways. We have the exact population they are looking for. Our permanent workforce would use it for commuting. Many of our tourists would definitely give it a try at least once.

Thanks for a place to post about it.

As to the Merry Go Round idea, you can rent them short term. Someone could give it a trial and see if it works for not too much money.

The Farmer’s Market is not run by the Ferry Landing; it’s a separate group who put it on. I’m sure they would be glad to hear any good ideas.

Good Luck!

We don't have a very good Farmers Market! Why can't they include other things like food, crafts, music, baked goods like some Farmers Markets do? And, the location was much better were it was before near Burger king anf would help the shops there.
Another wasted space here in Coronado is the place where Cora Mart used to be. The vacant store is an eye sore. We have plenty of restaurants. It would be nice to see SOMETHING go in there.

100% /Cora Mart! How has that building sat empty for so long? It was such a great store when I was a child, visiting to get school supplies, something to make a costume, candy, or a totally random Christmas gift for one of my parents. I can still remember the lady who worked there following kids around, convinced we were all pick-pockets. To have that fairly large building sitting empty and dusty is just crazy.

Hi Mary, great to hear from you. Please say hello to Katie. With regard to your comments, I'm in complete agreement. I'll put in a call to see what the skinny is on the Farmer's Market and how we could step it up a bit. Thanks.

Hi there, Erin, Good call. Cora Mart will hopefully be the next redevelopment move by the City now that the theatre is on it's way. I loved those penny candies and I never could understand why the owners always followed us around the store. Kids were probably their best customers.

What about the huge, empty space that used to be Petco? It would be great to see that utilized.

And, as long as we are dreaming, why not make Ferry Landing more "boat friendly"? The dock at Peohe's is very unfriendly for smaller boats. It is hard to dock there in calm water, let along rough. Why not add more docks so that people can use their boats to visit the restaurants and such? We could even charge a small docking fee. I'm always amazed when I look at all of the boat traffic that no one has capitalized on that business. Another benefit is that it keeps cars off the street!

I agree with Mary Grace....why did they tuck the farmers market back in the deep corner? Not inviting any more...should be out in the open where it use to be. I understand it is hard to attract many venders for such a short period of time on Tuesday afternoon....other markets are all day.

I used to visit the farmers market each week at the old location, but in the car park where they have it now is no longer family friendly. It would be better to have it at Isabella and Rotary Park as it is so small.

Not to be a downer, but I'm afraid a Merry-go-round by Il Fornaio would drive the neighbors nuts after a while. It would me! No question, something should be done about the Cora Mart location. What a huge waste of space and an eyesore. Wouldn't it be fun to have something like that again, or a "Woolworths" like place, with a lunch counter? I miss those kinds of stores.

Hi Pamela, I was wondering about their concern, too. Perhaps some sort of giant white noise machine? :)
