Why were the Coronado Police Officers shrouding their badges yesterday?

I just found out today. Here's an email I got from Commander Michael Lawton of the Coronado Police Department:

Lieutenant Frank Greene- Killed October 12, 1954

Tuesday, October 12th will be the 56th anniversary of the day that Lt. Frank Greene was killed in the 600 block of South Bound Orange Avenue during a traffic stop. Please take a moment on Tuesday to remember Lt. Greene and the sacrifice that he made to protect the citizens of Coronado.

It is also a good reminder to us to always be alert and aware of the circumstances occurring around us. The vehicle stop was of a suspicious vehicle, but Lt. Greene had no way of knowing that the criminals inside were conspiring to commit an armed robbery. He was shot while at the vehicle. After an extensive manhunt, the three suspects were arrested and eventually convicted for the murder of Lt. Greene.

In honor of Lt. Greene, Police personnel are authorized to wear black memorial badge bands on Tuesday October 12th. Also, please take a moment on Tuesday to visit Lt. Greene’s memorial plaque at the base of the Police Department flag posts.

The Firefighters have a running joke with the Police Officers about who has the more crazy job. They all tell me I'm nuts to run into a burning building . . . but I've got good gear and fire is fairly predictable. I would take a burning building ANY DAY over stopping a "suspicious vehicle" on a dark street by myself . . . with who-knows-what manner of felons inside who are intent on letting nothing--including me--interfere with their nefarious plans.

My hat is off to our brothers and sisters in the thin blue line for what they do--or are willing to do every day to keep us all safe. I know I'm grateful to have them there on all my calls for service: fires, traffic accidents, even medical aids. It's nice to know someone's keeping an eye out and has got my back when I'm concentrating on other things.

Thank you Lieutenant Greene for your sacrifice. Let us hope it's the last Line Of Duty Death in Coronado--or anywhere for that matter--but we will not forget.
