As a carrier of the San Diego Union and the Evening Tribune newspapers in 1956-7-8, I was lucky enough to have as one of my distinguished customers on my I Avenue paper route Marine General Alphonse De Carre (1892-1977).
Gen. De Carre commanded the 2nd Marine Division on Guadalcanal in 1943.
The General and Mrs. De Carre lived on the even-numbered side of I Avenue in the 700 block, as I recall. (My Mother and I lived @ 545 I Avenue).
It's amazing how many outstanding World War II heroes lived in The Crown City after The War ended. And even before that.
Someone ought to compile an exhaustive list. Maybe I'll start that project.
Sounds like an excellent idea Mr. Quady. I can't wait to read what you compile about this facet of Coronado history.
Comment by Vincent John Flynn on July 16, 2012 at 11:11am I remember the General's daughter. I think her name was, Pat. She was a year or two ahead of me at CHS. That would be an interesting list, Coronado is rich with military heroes.

Comment by Erick Johnson on July 16, 2012 at 5:42pm I really like Mr. Quady's idea. If there are any WW II heroes still living in Coronado, perhaps they could be included as well.
